While school is a place that one goes to hone their skills and expand their knowledge, you wouldn’t know it when the overwhelming force of magic is present in an anime world.
If there is a magical craft to be honed, you can rest assured that any magic school anime is about to have a main character who, despite being in a place of learning, can do it perfectly and powerfully.
Whether their power is misunderstood or they are a reincarnated demon lord, check out these anime recommendations about the adventures of overpowered main characters as they make their magical schools into their stomping grounds.
Best Magic School Anime Where The Main Character is Overpowered
The Familiar of Zero
If you consider Louise the main character of this series, then she isn’t what one would call “overpowered”. In fact, she is considered to be the worst mage at her academy.
However, one day she accidentally summons a human boy that she makes into her familiar. Needless to say, he definitely has more power than he appears to have.
The Irregular at Magic High School
Really, you can tell just from the title that the irregular is clearly going to curb-stomp everyone else at his magical high school.
While the series follows two siblings, the aforementioned irregular, Tatsuya, is placed in a lower ranking class than his prodigal sister. The way they measure power in the world is simply incompatible with the power that he has which he also augments with physical abilities.
As such, his unique abilities make him special and unexpectedly powerful.
Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero
In Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero, the main character, like many other children, got isekai’d to another world. When these children returned, they often came back with their powers and the government penned them all up in a school.
However, while the main character came back with magical abilities, he also came back with the daughter of a demon lord that he is calling his sister.
Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero has a wildly overpowered main character with big alpha male energy who uses his magic for whatever whim strikes him. Sometimes it is saving people, sometimes he is using his magic to do lewd things.
If you are looking for ecchi, Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero uses it early and often.
Demon King Daimao
If you are interested in a more lewd magic school adventure, Demon King Daimao definitely has that in spades. It is one of those “notoriously ecchi” anime only whispered about outside of certain circles.
In between those breasts, it follows Akuto who transfers into a magic academy with hopes to use his power to better the world. However, it is suddenly prophesied that he will become the demon king.
Although determined not to let his fate be decided by anyone other than himself, now half the school fears him and the other half wants to serve him.
The Misfit of Demon King Academy
After winning his war and staking his claim on the world, the powerful demon king grew excessively bored with peace. So, obviously, he decided to reincarnate several hundred years later for a change of pace.
Now he finds that the magical prowess of everyone has diminished due to this lasting peace, making him easily the most powerful person in the academy he enrolls in as a boy.
Absolute Duo
This particular magic school anime puts an emphasis on teamwork. In it, those who can materialize weapons from their souls are required to pair up in hopes to form the Absolute Duo.
If you are particularly familiar with anime, you can probably guess that the series involves two misfits being paired together and it ending with spectacular results.
In this case, the main character is a misfit because his weapon is a shield.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight
In a rather stunningly similar situation to Absolute Duo, Chivalry of a Failed Knight also follows people who can make weapons from their souls.
These people can choose to become mage-knights and train at a special academy.
While Ikki is one such person, he is the lowest ranked among his class, but there is definitely more to his power than it appears at first glance.
Spirit Chronicles
While isekai anime is no stranger to putting talented students in magic schools, Spirit Chronicles adds a bit of a twist.
The one reincarnated into the new world is actually sharing a body with a boy that was already alive in that world. That leads to a bit of the intrigue in the plot, but this shared body ends up saving a princess and that earns him a seat in a very royal academy.
Wise Man’s Grandchild
Although an isekai anime, Wise Man’s Granchild sees the main character only vaguely aware of any previous life. Instead, he was raised by a powerful mage in his forest home.
While this taught the young man powerful magics, alas, that did not transfer to social skills.
The entire series sees him going to school and being the most wildly powerful one there, but lacking much in the way of common sense.
Trinity Seven
Trinity Seven brings with it another harem-full dose of ecchi, but also, a surprisingly good plot.
It follows Arata who uses a magical grimoire that was given to him to artificially reconstruct his town after it was destroyed. After a mage comes to investigate this, she demands he hand over the book or die.
He chooses to instead hone his powers at an academy with a small handful of other magic users (who all happen to be female.)
Magical Warfare
After rescuing a random girl he finds on the street, she makes Takeshi into a magic user. He now discovers that there is his normal and boring world, and one entirely separate where the magic users dwell.
With newfound power, he ends up enrolling at a magic academy to hone his powers and finds that ambitions in the magical world are rumbling towards war.
Blade Dance of the Elementalers
In this world, shrine maidens make pacts with spirits in order to grow their magical powers as elementalists.
Near one such school for these girls, Kamito happens upon a girl trying to form a pact with a spirit, but the spirit forms the pact with him instead despite not being a shrine maiden or indeed a maiden at all.
Now he is invited to join their school as well as soon fight in their Blade Dance battle competition.
Knight’s and Magic
Knight’s and Magic follows an otaku who is reincarnated into a land of magic where they use their powers to pilot mechs in order to force back demonic beasts. Possessing a decent aptitude for the compatible magic, he enrolls in an academy that trains the next generation to pilot and build these mechs.
The overpowered aspect comes from his knowledge of mecha anime. The designs of the mechs in the fantasy world are limited, but a passionate mecha otaku brings hundreds of hours of mecha anime knowledge to bear when designing new, wildly overpowered mech creations.
Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor
In a bit of a twist, it is not a student of this magic school that is wildly overpowered, but rather their comical teacher.
His students seem to take issue with his lackadaisical approach to education and his lazy attitude, but he has a complicated past and overwhelming power to bring to forth when necessary.
Unlimited Fafnir
In this world, a select group of girls have the ability to manipulate dark matter into powerful weapons. As such, they are trained at an all-girls’ school, right up until Yuu, a boy, manifests the power and enrolls there too.
Join them as they investigate why people with these powers suddenly appeared as well as why their world is growing chaotic with the appearance of destructive monsters that only these warriors can stand against.
The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest
In a familiar set up, The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest features a powerful sage who has reached the limit of his potential as dictated by inborn crests. As such, he chooses to reincarnate so that he might get a more desirable crest in a new life.
He succeeds in every way, but the crest he was seeking has now been slandered as horribly weak by the ancient menace of demons that have infiltrated humanity.
As such, you watch him immediately humble every other student in his new magic school by curb-stomping them with his “weak” crest powers.
Vermeil in Gold
Unlike the other magic school anime with an OP MC on this list, Alto isn’t as blatantly overpowered at first glance. In fact, he looks very much like a little boy whose virtue is in danger from the large-busted demon he accidentally summoned.
However, it is the fact that he was able to summon and contract a demon that makes him overpowered. It is a difficult feat and requires an abundance of magical energy, of which he has!
If you enjoy your magic school anime on the ecchi side, but also still saving some budget for what are truthfully very epic magic battles, Vermeil in Gold is for you.
The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule The World
In the world of The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World, there are several great magicians in the world made famous by a great war, of which the up-and-coming generation of magic students aspire to.
However, they don’t know that one of the strongest is among them in their class, living life low-key, kind of accidentally building a harem, and pretending to be kind of weak until his power is really needed.
An interesting twist in The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World is that his power was inherited as well as the fact that he was an orphan raised around powerful mages and soldiers on the battlefield. So he’s seen a little more of life than most of his peers.
The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World
While an isekai anime, The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World actually puts on interesting twist on the standard “gain great magic in a new world and go to magic school with your harem” formula.
The main character has great spiritual power as an exorcist, but poor magic power by his new fantasy world’s standards. As such, he uses powerful exorcist magic the likes of which no one in that world has seen, but keeps it close enough to looking like standard magic so as to not being so unbelievable.
He is often playing a dangerous game of becoming some sort of oddity that will gain him unwanted attention, but this series really puts on emphasis on the main character using his cunning to get the results he wants.
The Eminence in Shadow
The big joke in The Eminence in Shadow is that the main character is kind of a chuunibyou. He pretends he is waging a shadow war with an evil organization and thinks his minions are humoring him. However, he actually is waging a shadow war with an evil organization.
Outside of his activities with his organization, Shadow Garden, the main character is just a standard student at magic school. However, he plays at being weak to not attract any unwanted attention. After school, however, he is atomic.
