In all romance anime, it takes two – at minimum – to form a couple. Yet, storytelling often demands that the narrative focus on one main character that we can bond with. This means romance anime often forces a choice between exploring the love life of a male main character or a female main character.
However, there is a third option – a split main character role!
A romance anime that shares the perspective between both characters of the main couple is somewhat rare, but not exactly uncommon. In fact, you may find that some of the best romance anime actually does just this.
By sharing the perspective of both sides of a couple, you can build stronger characters and a more relatable, understandable relationship. If you are looking for romance anime that shares the main character role between the main couple, give these anime recommendations a try.

Romance Anime With a Shared Perspective Between The Couple
Horimiya
Although lauded for being likable and intelligent, Kyouko Hori hides the fact that she has to take care of her brother and the housework because her parents are always working. Izumi Miyamura, on the other hand, is seen as a brooding, bespectacled otaku. Outside of school, he sports tattoos and nine piercings. By happenstance, the two outside school personalities of these two classmates meet and they get to know a side of each other they don’t show their peers
Horimiya explores both sides of not just its main couple, but of its many side character relationships as well. While it has been faulted for getting a little too lost in its side character stories, the show does explore all the little caveats of young love from every angle by including them.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War
Considered a genius, Miyuki Shirogane leads the student council in his prestigious school. Alongside his beautiful and wealthy vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya, the two are regarded as the perfect couple despite no romantic relationship. The truth is, however, they both have feelings for each other, but neither can confess. This is the battle of two people trying to get the other to confess first!
Since the episodes are often formatted as skits, with the occasional overall arc, the perspective often jumps between characters depending on what is going on. It means you get pretty even glimpses as sweetness. Furthermore, you get to know the characters more intimately than even they know each other because the show is very much about what is left unsaid.
Tsurezure Children
Tsurezure Children depicts the many different scenarios of young love. From the relationship between the student council president and a rebel girl or a boy so crippled by his own lack of self-confidence that he can’t accept that a girl confessed to him. With many more tales within, you follow their triumphs and failures throughout their romances.
Because it focuses on so many couples, you get to see many different romances from many different situations, personalities, and experiences. It really is the most charming part of this series.
A Lull in the Sea
Long ago, all of humanity lived underwater. However, a portion of them soon left to live on the surface, losing the ability to breath underwater. With this gap between them, the two societies grew apart. A Lull in the Sea tells the story of a group of kids forced to attend school above the water where they come to terms with themselves and the discrimination against them.
…Everyone in A Lull in the Sea loves everyone. It is a series infamous for its large and complicated love triangle. It would be even more complicated if the focus didn’t shift to other characters. Although, there are plenty of times where their feelings show through actions instead of what they are saying or thinking.
Kokoro Connect
One day, for seemingly no reason in particular, the members of the Cultural Research Club start randomly switching bodies with each other. It becomes utter chaos, especially when members of the opposite sex start switching. However, when you are wearing someone else’s skin, it is hard to keep your most guarded secrets inside.
When your whole series is about switching bodies, split perspectives and inner monologues become super important.
Skilled Teaser Takagi-san
For Nishikata, no one knows him better than Takagi-san. Unfortunately for him, she uses this knowledge to unrelentingly tease him on a daily basis. Nishikata vows to get revenge for all that blushing he has done, but is he good enough to overcome her skill?
While you only get rare glimpses into Takagi’s true feelings in her head, really her true feelings are written all over her face. As for Nishikata, he refuses to admit them even to himself, but they show through his actions.
Waiting in Summer
While testing out his filming camera one night, Kaito is blown off the bridge by a streak of blue light. When he wakes up, he finds himself in his room. This leads to a meeting with an upperclassman that changes his summer forever.
While it starts off definitely feeling like it will be mostly from the male main characters’ perspective, the interesting thing is that it becomes more split as the series goes on. Sometimes in the later bit, it doesn’t even feel like Kaito is the main character anymore.
Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World
For years, war has raged between the Empire and the realm of witches, Nebulis. On the battlefield, a talented young knight is tasked with killing the princess of Nebulis, but he is taken by her beauty and she taken by his honor.
T’is a fantasy romance with real Romeo and Juliet vibes. Both parties feel for each other, but because they are often separated by warring nations, during the moments they are apart, their longing is portrayed to you.
Just Because
At a certain high school, the third years are all preparing for the first step of their adult lives. However, several students at the school find their lives intersect with the appearance of a new transfer student who reignites the lingering feelings of several people.
Since the series is all about struggling to admit your feelings to even yourself, you get a personal glimpse into the minds of each character as an audience member. It is needed to make it clear what is even going on sometimes.
Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It
One day, beautiful female scientist Ayame told her co-worker Shinya that she loved him. Both being rational people, they expressed their lack of experience with romance and decided to use science as a way to concretely conclude if they did indeed love each other.
As a data-driven romance, you need input for both parties for a well-rounded experiment. But seriously, the focus on the logical when things are clear on the emotional level makes this an amazing comedy and romance.
Devils’ Line
In this world, devils, what they refer to as vampires, live among humans. The majority of humanity isn’t aware of them as they do not differ from humans. A vampire does not even need to drink human blood, but once they taste it or sometimes even see it, they experience such lust and pleasure that they will kill again. Anzai, a half-vampire is part of a secret sub-section of the police force that deals with these rogue vampires that transform and rampage. One day, he saves college student Tsukasa and their fates become intertwined.
Vampires. If you let them be the main perspective, all you’d get is angst. There’s enough here as it is, but Tsukasa keeps things lighter. However, as there is a deeper plot going on and Anzai is exploring his blood lust, the perspective shifts occasionally.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Morioka Moriko has had enough of being an overworked corporate slave, so she decided to retire herself to the NEET lifestyle. While at home, yearning for the previous connections she once made in online gaming, she starts up a new MMO. There she creates her character, the handsome Hayashi. However, in her newbie struggles she meets a Lily, another character willing to help her and they begin to grow closer to each other. At the same time, in real life, Moriko also has a shocking encounter with a handsome corporate employee.
Well, since it is a romance that blooms between two characters in a game who have unknowingly started having feelings between them after accidentally meeting in real life, being one-sided in perspective would be almost creepy.
