Excited to have a different and more social high school life, Raidou introduces himself to his seat neighbor on the first day. At first, he thinks this small girl is just ignoring him. However, he discovers that she has a quiet voice and is bad at determining personal space. From this meeting, an odd friendship blooms.
What started off as a series of solid jokes became an increasingly lovely growing romance between someone with no personal space and someone who looks at things almost completely objectively. Komi-san Can’t Communicate
It is the first day for incoming freshmen at the prestigious Itan Private High School. For Hitohito Tadano, he considers himself lucky to get in and angles to not make waves during his high school career. However, he finds himself sitting next to the beautiful, beloved, yet cold and silent Shouko Komi, immediately earning the ire of his classmates. After a series of events leads to him being left alone with her, he discovers that she is not cold, but suffers from extreme social anxiety that prevents her from speaking. After a long conversation through writing, he wants to help her reach her goal of making 100 friends.
Really, these shows are of the same sort, but in different packages. They are both comedies, but Komi-san insists it is a romance and does inject slightly more drama into things, whereas Aharen-san keeps things very light at all times. Regardless, both are just showcasing different shenanigans as a man tries to help a girl overcome hurdles.
Hitori Bocchi’s Lifestyle
Suffering from extreme social anxiety, Hitori Bocchi has problems making friends. To make matters worse, she is going to middle school without her one and only friend. Furthermore, her only friend will only talk to her if she makes new friends at this school. So begins her struggle.
If you enjoy your girls very cute and very bad at talking to people, then Hitori Bocchi’s Lifestyle is more of the same. It is a light comedy series about a girl trying to make friends and also, at the same time, spending time with those friends that she has made.
High Score Girl
Haruo is not popular, handsome, or even friendly. His sole redeeming quality is his skill at video games. However, his world is thrown upside down by a popular rich girl in his class, Oono, who absolutely trounces him in every game. Now he follows her from arcade to arcade trying to win.
Both series feature almost completely silent female main characters that are carried by their thug-like, but kind male companions. The major difference is that High Score Girl is very intently focused on arcade gaming, though it moves onto romance later in the series.
Senryuu Girl
Yukishiro Nanako is cute and cheerful, but so shy she has become non-verbal. The only way she can express her thoughts is through haiku. Busujima Eiji is a delinquent in every way, except for the fact that he is kind and has never been in a fight. Together these two form the school’s literature club.
Instead of whispers and personal space invasion, Senryuu Girl gives its silent female character the unique quirk of communicating through short poems. While the jokes can fall flat sometimes, it is a lovely slice of life comedy.
For Fans of Odd Desk Neighbors
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
For Tanaka, being listless is a way of life. He spends his every waking moment looking for ways to conserve his energy. However, it seems the whole world is out to change his lazy ways.
Both series revolve around tough-looking people getting involved with silent, quirky desk neighbors. However, the roles are gender swapped between them. Regardless, there is tons of great character comedy in both.
My Neighbor Seki
Yokoi is a dedicated student, but she is sat next to Seki, who is…not. Instead of paying attention in class, he constantly creates extremely detailed games and other distractions on his desk. However, though Yokoi finds herself drawn in, somehow it is always her that gets in trouble with the teacher.
Both series feature relatively normal people dealing with their quirky desk neighbor at school. However, while Aharen extends past the classroom, Seki is almost exclusively about the strange schemes that a girl gets pulled into by the bored guy she sits next to.
Skilled Teaser Takagi-san
For Nishikata, no one knows him better than Takagi-san. Unfortunately for him, she uses this knowledge to unrelentingly tease him on a daily basis. Nishikata vows to get revenge for all that blushing he has done, but is he good enough to overcome her skill?
If Aharen and its big hints at romance left you frustrated, then Skilled Teaser Takagi-san is in a more satisfying vein. While it is perhaps an even better comedy than Aharen, it also has those satisfying romantic moments of a series that doesn’t keep things to subtext.

Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun
Chiyo Sakura has fallen head over heels for the handsome and oblivious Umetarou Nozaki. However, when she confesses her love, he gives her an autograph. It turns out this stoic boy is actually a respected shoujo manga artist. After a series of misunderstandings, Chiyo winds up not as his girlfriend, but as his manga assistant.
Both series lean into romantic moments as things go on, but will always be most notable for solid jokes. However, while Aharen-san does move forward romantically, this series has the densitiy of the male lead as a major hurdle for that.
Kotoura-San
Haruka Kotoura is a school girl that can read people’s minds. Unfortunately, it has caused her nothing but trouble, eventually causing her parent’s divorce. After she moves to a new school, she tries to avoid her classmates, but a classmate of hers finds her power not scary, but intriguing.
Both series feature rather odd girls who are brought out of their shell by a boy who is also odd, but in complimentary ways to them. Romance blooms, albeit slowly, but Kotoura-san can be surprisingly sad at times with its backstories.
My Senpai is Annoying
At a trading company, junior salesperson Futaba Igarashi has flourished under the guidance of her senpai, Harumi Takeda. However, while he teases her about her short stature, Igarashi has come to admire Takeda for his reliability in the workplace as their relationship continues to develop.
Both series feature tough and large guys becoming close with smaller, differently tempered girls. However, while Aharen-san is a school life romance, this is a workplace one. Furthermore, while Aharen-san romantically progresses, this show progresses in the sense that they act increasingly more like a couple, but aren’t.
